The ATC is the sponsoring church for Woolston-Steen Theological Seminary, certified by the Washington Board of Higher Education to grant degrees in Wiccan Ministry. Graduate with an Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or Doctorate in Wiccan Ministry.
The Woolston-Steen Theological Seminary is a nonprofit, college level post-secondary educational institution, an institution of higher learning created by the Aquarian Tabernacle Church for the purpose of establishing the highest standards of training ethics and service, and leading to the possible ordination of Wiccan clergy in the tradition of the Church.
Wicca, for as long as it has existed, has been an oral tradition usually taught one-on-one from the lips of the priestess to the ear of the postulant. Over the years, the body of material taught has eroded down to the bare essentials, and there is doubt that it ever contained the information that is so essential for the conduct of a religious institution in today’s hurried world.
It is for that reason that the Church has created the Woolston-Steen Theological Seminary. Named for two respected Wiccan High Priestesses who have passed away, it seeks to uphold their example of ethics, leadership and compassion in Wiccan ministry.
Rev. Patricia Holmes Woolston was born in England in 1937. She emigrated to British Columbia, Canada where she taught primary school while pursuing her vocation as a priestess until her untimely death from cancer in 1987.
Rev. Georgina Mabel “Jo” Steen, sometimes known as Mother Moth, was born in British Columbia, Canada in 1930. She emigrated to Washington state, where she lived until her untimely death from advanced emphysema in 1996. Jo lived for a time in Sand Francisco, where she taught Wicca and spellcraft, and was instrumental, together with Starhawk, in the establishment of Compost, and early and well respected teaching coven in San Francisco. It was there that she was inspired to commission the creation of the Hekate Shrine, now housed on campus in the Goddess Shrine.
Both Patricia and Jo served their Goddess long and well, and we seek to honor their memories and their examples with this Seminary.
Although the primary teaching location is at the Church Campus in Index, Washington, classes are offered in varying locations from time to time. Seminary Extensions are contemplated in other, more distant geographical national locations and in foreign countries as the need develops.
While initially the seminary was oriented solely toward ordination of Wiccan clergy to the traditional three levels of attainment, the class structure has been created and refined in order to include appropriate academic theological degrees. The initial thrust is toward the greatest need: a high standard of education and ordination of our clergy in keeping with the traditions and the Vision Statement of the Church.Back to Top
About the Woolston-Steen Seminary
The Woolston-Steen Seminary is an institution of Wiccan theological education recognized only by the Pagan and Wicca Church Conference of the Americas (PWCCA), rather than through any mainstream accrediting organization. At this time,PWCCA is not recognized by the state of Washington or the U.S. Department of H.E.W., and for religious reasons, that is not likely ever to change. Our particular focus at Woolston-Steen is the complete education of Wiccan clergy to function in both the religious and secular spheres.
The Woolston-Steen Theological Seminary is not accredited through the mainstream religious accrediting bodies because of the uniqueness of Pagan religions and the historical hostility toward our faith. To require Wiccan seminaries to submit to the examination by agencies created by governments or faiths which have traditionally oppressed Wicca is seen within Paganism as highly inappropriate.
In addition to the training of clergy for ordination, classes are also offered to the general public. This is accomplished through making the Woolston-Steen Seminary classes open to the general public as well as an intensive and closed clergy track program. Classes offered, are open to the public, do not require admission to the Seminary.
The Woolston-Steen Seminary has been granted religious exemption by the Washington State Higher Education Coordinating Board Degree Authorization Agency as a college-level, degree-granting institution of higher learning whose specific focus is the education of Wiccan and Pagan clergy. In addition to clergy training, many classes are offered toward an Associate of Ministry degree and non-clergy religious vocations. Ask for a schedule.
