Covens sometimes grow into Affiliates
You read a book, meet a friend, get excited about exploring the inner realms, next thing you know you have a circle. It's great fun at first, but soon enough you want to know more and need a teacher. It's hard to get training with a coven when you already have a spiritual family. This is one of the most common pit-falls of magical training, enthusiastically jumping into leadership too soon then realizing you need help.
